Artist Statement
As a theater-maker, I specialize in developing new works and devised processes. The worlds I create are always a little magic, a little liminal– I like the ways in which theater allows me to look at a moment and suspend it for an instant. I enjoy stretching the bounds of narrative in this way: I believe that theater is more about presence than it is about narrative, and I ground my work in the fostering of an aura, an energy, rather than a clear-cut story. I am very inspired by the work of Maria Irene Fornes and the wonders and violence of her worlds. I enjoy working towards a contemporary expressionist and symbolist theater, a place of meanings and emotion. I am not afraid of studying violence in my work– but it is a violence that is altered and weighed, a violence offered up for thought. A violence transformed. I also very much ground my work in Pina Bausch’s practices: I like to explore the repetition, the break-down and evolution of a movement. My theater is always a little distant from the reality it aims to represent: it creates a different reality by teaching itself new ways of moving, new ways of thinking, new ways of seeing. It aims to offer a different perspective.
